Carpet Souk (Mina Zayed)
Rolled kilims, Afghan knots and real bargaining in the old port district
Pottery, plants and goods straight off the dhows from Iran
The Iranian Souk grew exactly as souks are supposed to: dhows crossing from Iran unload terracotta pots, glazed ceramics, woven baskets, household goods and garden plants directly onto the Mina quayside, and the stalls sell them metres from the boats.
It's the capital's go-to for garden pottery — pyramids of urns and planters at a fraction of garden-centre prices — plus hand-painted bowls, samovars and the pleasingly random inventory of a working port bazaar. The adjoining plant souk turns the whole quarter green.
Like all of Mina Zayed it's mid-transformation, but the dhow trade endures. Come at golden hour, photograph the pottery against the boats, and haggle gently — prices are already honest.
