Visa Guide

Visa on arrival nationalities, pre-apply process, tourist visa costs (30-day AED 300, 90-day AED 650), transit visas, extensions and overstay fines (AED 100/day after 10-day grace).

Do you even need a visa?

Start here, because most visitors overthink this completely. If you hold a passport from the UK, Ireland, the EU, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan or dozens of similar countries, you do not apply for anything — you land, get stamped in free for 30 or 90 days, and walk out. That single fact covers the large majority of our readers, and the full nationality list lives in our Visa on Arrival Countries guide.

You only enter the world of applications if your passport is not on that list, if you need longer than the on-arrival stay, or if you want multiple entries. In that case the standard products are simple: a 30-day single-entry tourist visa around AED 300, a 90-day visa around AED 650, and 48-hour (AED 50) or 96-hour (AED 100) transit visas for stopovers. All are arranged online before flying, normally through your airline, your hotel, or a licensed UAE travel agency.

Costs and processing, honestly

Budget AED 300–350 all-in for a 30-day visa and AED 650–800 for 90 days, with express processing adding roughly AED 100–200. Anyone quoting double that is padding margins — get a second quote. Standard processing runs 3–5 working days excluding UAE weekends and public holidays, so apply at least two weeks before departure; a rejection or document query still leaves time to fix and reapply.

What gets applications rejected is almost always paperwork, not policy: blurry passport scans, photographs with the wrong background, or a passport expiring inside six months. Scan at high resolution, photograph against a plain white wall, and check expiry before you pay anyone a fils.

Visa checklist before you fly

  • Confirm whether your nationality gets visa on arrival — most Western passports do.
  • Passport valid 6+ months with two blank pages; airlines enforce this at check-in.
  • Match visa length to trip length plus buffer; extensions cost more than upgrading upfront.
  • Keep the e-visa on your phone and a printed copy in your bag.
  • Note the enter-before date (usually 60 days from issue) and the overstay fine: AED 100/day after a 10-day grace.

❓ Common questions

How far in advance should I apply?

Two to three weeks. Processing is 3–5 working days, but holidays, queries and rejections eat buffers fast.

Can I extend once I am there?

Yes, tourist visas extend in-country without a border run — see our Visa Extension guide. Apply a week before expiry, never after.

Do children need visas?

Yes, every traveller including infants needs an individual visa, though kids are often exempt from the fee itself.

What is the biggest visa mistake tourists make?

Buying a 30-day visa for a 29-day trip with zero margin, then paying extension fees that exceed the 90-day price. Buy buffer.

Does a visa guarantee entry?

No — the final decision always sits with the immigration officer at the border. refusals of genuine tourists are extraordinarily rare, but arrive polite, sober and with documents ready regardless.

What if my visa is delayed?

Chase the sponsor first (airline, hotel or agency) with your application reference — they see status you cannot. After five working days with no answer, escalate to express processing or a second application through a different sponsor.
