Kids & Family Planning

What to pack for kids, best family hotels, stroller-friendly areas, baby supplies availability and kids-eat-free deals.

Why the UAE is easy with kids

Few destinations cater to families as deliberately as the UAE: theme parks by the cluster, hotel kids clubs as standard in resorts, stroller-friendly malls everywhere, high chairs in nearly every restaurant, and a service culture that genuinely welcomes children rather than tolerating them. Tap water safety, high food standards and excellent private hospitals remove the background worries that complicate other regions.

The main adversary is the sun, not the culture. Summer midday heat rules out unshaded queues with toddlers, so family itineraries here run on inversion: indoor mornings (aquariums, KidZania, museums), pool late afternoons, and evenings outdoors after 5pm when the light turns golden and temperatures relent, especially October to April.

Where families win

Base decisions matter most. Beach resorts with kids clubs (Atlantis, JBR and Palm properties, Yas Island hotels) convert parental survival into actual holiday — the premium over city hotels pays for itself in supervised play hours. For explorers, hotel apartments with kitchens and washing machines beat standard rooms the moment bottles, snacks and laundry enter the equation. Yas Island in Abu Dhabi deserves special mention: three world-class parks, a waterpark and Warner Bros within minutes of family-tuned hotels, bookable as a 2–3 day module inside any UAE trip.

Day-wise, pair one big-ticket park day with one free day (beach morning, mall aquarium afternoon, fountain evening) to control both budget and meltdowns. Desert safaris work from around age five up — dune bashing intensity varies by driver, so request the gentle run and sit up front if anyone is motion-sensitive.

Family logistics

  • Baby supplies (formula, nappies, wipes) are stocked in every supermarket and pharmacy — pack light, buy there.
  • The metro, Dubai Mall, Yas Mall and airports are fully step-free; abra boats and old souks are not — plan carries.
  • Kids-eat-free deals rotate across hotel restaurants; ask at check-in rather than discovering them by accident.
  • Sunscreen, hats and water discipline apply double to children; shade-hop between 11am and 4pm in summer.
  • Car seats are legally required — request them explicitly with every transfer and rental booking.

❓ Common questions

Is the UAE safe for kids?

Extremely. Low street risk, high food and water standards, and vigilant lifeguarding at hotel beaches and waterparks.

What age works for desert safaris?

Around five and up for dune bashing; camps welcome all ages. Skip the bashing (not the camp) with under-5s.

Are strollers practical?

In malls, parks, the Marina and Yas Island — absolutely. In souks, abras and desert camps — bring a carrier instead.

Do hotels offer babysitting?

Most 4–5 star resorts do, licensed and bookable by the hour. Arrange a day ahead in peak season.

Which area is best with a stroller?

The Marina, JBR, Yas Island and all major malls are flat and step-free. Old Dubai and desert camps need a carrier instead — and most malls lend strollers free at customer service desks.

Are kids clubs worth resort premiums?

For ages 4–12, usually yes — supervised hours convert directly into adult downtime. Check club hours first: some close midday or charge extra evenings.
