Flights & Airlines
Emirates, Flydubai, Etihad, Air Arabia. Airports: DXB, DWC, AUH, SHJ. Terminal guide and cheapest months to fly.
Airlines: who flies what
Emirates is the default long-haul choice into Dubai with the deepest route network, generous baggage and the A380 experience on major routes. Flydubai, its low-cost sibling, covers the region and secondary cities from Terminal 2. Etihad anchors Abu Dhabi with comparable long-haul quality and often sharper pricing to Asia. Air Arabia (Sharjah) and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi mop up the budget end — genuinely cheap, with the usual low-cost rules on bags, seats and food.
For multi-city Gulf trips, open-jaw tickets (into Dubai, out of Abu Dhabi or Muscat) routinely cost the same as returns and save a full travel day. Stopover programmes from Emirates and Etihad add discounted hotels to long layovers — see our Transit Visa guide before dismissing a 20-hour connection.
Airports: pick the right one
DXB (Dubai International) handles the volume: Terminal 3 for Emirates and Flydubai long-haul, Terminal 1 for other internationals, Terminal 2 for regional low-cost. The Red Line metro serves Terminals 1 and 3 directly — a huge practical advantage. DWC (Al Maktoum) is the second Dubai airport, distant from the centre but quiet and fast. AUH (Abu Dhabi Zayed International) is a stunning new terminal 60–90 minutes from Dubai by bus or taxi. SHJ (Sharjah) serves Air Arabia with rock-bottom fares and a 30–45 minute transfer into Dubai outside rush hour.
When comparing fares, price the ground transfer in: a cheap SHJ arrival plus rush-hour taxi can erase the saving versus DXB on the metro.
Booking tactics
- Cheapest months to fly in: June–September and late January (excluding DSF peaks); priciest: mid-December to early January.
- Book 6–10 weeks out for the best economy fares; business class drops closer to departure on quiet routes.
- Tuesday and Wednesday departures undercut weekends noticeably on Gulf routes.
- Check AUH and SHJ before defaulting to DXB — the metro and buses make them easy.
- Add the free stopover hotel offer on Emirates/Etihad layovers over 8 hours.
❓ Common questions
Which airport is closest to the Marina?
DXB Terminal 3 by metro (about 30 minutes) beats DWC by road in most traffic. AUH is 60–90 minutes away.
Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 at DXB?
Terminal 3 is Emirates/Flydubai only; everyone else uses Terminal 1. They connect airside, but landside transfers need the shuttle or metro.
How early should I arrive for departure?
Three hours for international, as the official guidance says — Friday evenings and holiday eves genuinely need it.
Are budget airlines reliable here?
Yes. Air Arabia and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi run solid operations; just read the baggage rules before assuming anything is included.
What is the stopover sweet spot?
Eight to forty-eight hours: enough to clear immigration, sleep properly and see one district well. Under five hours, stay airside — and always leave a two-hour buffer before the onward boarding call.
Should I book direct or via comparison sites?
Compare everywhere, then check the airline site before paying — direct bookings get better rebooking treatment during disruptions, often matching aggregator prices exactly, with loyalty miles on top for frequent flyers.
