Travel Insurance
Why it matters — emergency medical costs without insurance are very high. What to look for in a policy.
Why this one is non-negotiable
The UAE has excellent private healthcare and prices to match: an emergency room visit runs into thousands of dirhams, a hospital night into five figures, and a medical evacuation home can exceed the cost of the entire holiday several times over. Travel insurance here is not a formality — it is the difference between an anecdote and a financial event. Policies covering a week in the UAE typically cost less than a single restaurant dinner, which makes skipping it one of the worst bets in travel.
Beyond medical cover, the policy earns its keep on trip mechanics: cancelled flights during the region busy season, lost baggage between connections, and stolen phones on beach days. Read the activities clause carefully, because the UAE sells exactly the activities insurers love to exclude.
What the policy must cover
Emergency medical expenses of at least USD 100,000 (higher is better), explicitly including emergency dental and hospital cash benefits. Medical evacuation and repatriation to your home country — confirm the wording covers evacuation, not just local treatment. Trip cancellation and curtailment for illness, family emergencies and airline failure. Baggage loss and theft, with single-item limits high enough for a phone or camera.
Then the UAE-specific riders: adventure activities (skydiving, dune buggies, jet skis, ziplines, scuba) are frequently excluded by default and need an add-on or a specialist policy. Desert driving as a passenger is usually covered; quad biking often is not. If safaris, water sports or the Palm skydive feature in your plans, get the exclusion list in writing before you pay.
Buying checklist
- Medical cover USD 100k+, evacuation and repatriation included.
- Adventure-sports add-on if doing safaris, diving, skydiving or jet skis.
- Cancellation cover at least equal to prepaid hotels and tours.
- 24-hour emergency assistance line that answers in English.
- Declare pre-existing conditions honestly — non-disclosure voids claims.
❓ Common questions
Is insurance required for the visa?
No current entry rule mandates it for tourists. It remains strongly advised regardless.
Will my credit card cover me?
Sometimes partially — premium cards include travel cover, but limits are often low and adventure activities excluded. Read the certificate, do not assume.
What if I need a hospital?
Private hospitals (Mediclinic, NMC, Aster) accept walk-ins and deal with insurers daily; public Rashid Hospital handles emergencies. Keep your policy number in your phone.
Does insurance cover desert rescue?
Standard medical policies cover treatment after rescue. Dedicated evacuation cover matters for Liwa and mountain areas with patchy signal — tell someone your route regardless.
Does insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Only if declared and accepted — standard policies exclude undeclared conditions entirely. Declare everything, pay the loading, travel with the acceptance in writing, and carry a summary of cover in your phone.
Does insurance cover trip cancellation?
Good policies refund prepaid hotels, tours and flights for covered reasons (illness, emergencies, airline failure). Insure the week you book the big-ticket items, not the week you fly, and keep emergency numbers saved offline too.
