Qasr Al Hosn
The fort the city grew around — Abu Dhabi's oldest building, beautifully retold
A modern souk by Norman Foster — on the site of the city's original market
Abu Dhabi's Central Market was the city's original souk — when it burned down, Foster + Partners rebuilt its spirit rather than its chaos: a contemporary souk of timber lattices, filtered light, courtyards and fountains that ranks among the most beautiful retail spaces in the Gulf.
Inside, small traders sell carpets, oud and perfume, abayas, spices, dates and handicrafts alongside cafés and design stores — a curated, air-conditioned take on souk culture that trades bargaining theatre for comfort and quality.
Purists should still hit the Mina markets for the raw version, but as a downtown stop the WTC Souk delivers the aesthetic and the souvenirs without the sweat — and the architecture alone justifies the visit.
