Airport Arrival Guide
Step by step from landing to hotel: immigration, SIM counter, metro vs taxi, luggage. DXB Terminal 1 vs 3, plus the Abu Dhabi airport guide.
Touchdown to kerb in order
The walk from gate to immigration at DXB Terminal 3 can take ten minutes alone — follow Passport Control signs and join the Visitors lanes with your passport open at the photo page. The officer scans, takes an eye print, and stamps you in; twenty to forty minutes kerb-to-kerb is normal, stretching past an hour only on peak holiday evenings. Bags arrive quickly by global standards, and customs is usually a straight walk-through green channel unless you are carrying restricted items.
Terminal confusion causes more missed pickups than traffic does. Emirates and Flydubai long-haul use Terminal 3; nearly everyone else uses Terminal 1; regional low-cost uses Terminal 2, which sits apart with no metro link. Confirm your terminal before booking any timed transfer, and tell your hotel or driver exactly which one — Terminal 1 and 3 arrivals halls are a metro ride apart.
First three moves landside
One, connectivity: the Etisalat and du counters in arrivals sell tourist SIMs (AED 55–100 for data bundles) in minutes with just a passport — do it before leaving, because maps, Careem and WhatsApp location-sharing start mattering immediately. Two, cash: withdraw AED 200–300 from any airport ATM for abras, tips and small shops; skip the airport exchange counters whose rates lag the city by a wide margin. Three, transport: the metro serves Terminals 1 and 3 directly (buy a Nol card at the station machines), taxis queue outside every terminal with RTA-regulated meters, and hotel shuttles wait with name boards in the pickup zones.
Abu Dhabi arrivals follow the same script in the spectacular new Terminal A: immigration, SIM counters, then buses (including services toward Dubai), taxis, or pre-booked transfers. The building is enormous — allow extra walking time and read gate signage early on departure day too.
Arrival checklist
- Passport open at photo page; e-visa on phone (pre-apply nationalities).
- Tourist SIM at the arrivals counter before leaving the terminal.
- Nol card from metro machines (T1/T3) or AED 200–300 from an ATM.
- Screenshot your hotel address plus a nearby landmark for taxi drivers.
- Keep boarding pass until through customs — occasionally rechecked.
❓ Common questions
Metro or taxi from the airport?
Metro for Terminals 1/3 when travelling light (AED 3–7 to most of Dubai). Taxi for Terminal 2, groups with luggage, or arrivals after metro closing.
How long does immigration take?
Twenty to forty minutes typically; over an hour on peak evenings. Smart gates cut repeat visits to under a minute.
Is there free WiFi at the airport?
Yes — fast free WiFi throughout DXB and AUH, handy for messaging your driver before the SIM purchase.
What if my driver is not there?
Message first (numbers get mixed up), then head to the official taxi queue rather than accepting rides from touts inside the hall.
Terminal 1 or 3 for my flight?
Emirates and Flydubai long-haul use Terminal 3; nearly everyone else uses Terminal 1. Check your ticket — the terminals are a metro ride apart, so allow transfer time.
Can I sleep at the airport?
DXB terminal lounges sell rest access, and airside hotels (Premier Inn T1, Holiday Inn Express T3) rent day rooms. Landside napping draws security attention — book the room.
