Taxi & Ride Apps
RTA cream taxis, Careem, Uber. Starting fare AED 12, approximate costs between major spots, and the pink-roof ladies taxi.
The three ways to ride
Cream-roof RTA taxis are the default: metered, regulated, everywhere, and hailed by hand, hotel queue or phone. Flagfall is around AED 12 from most ranks (AED 25 from the airport), and crosstown Dubai rides typically land between AED 30 and 70 depending on traffic — always insist the meter runs, though refusals are rare these days. Careem is the regional champion and usually the better app experience: upfront pricing, Hala economy cars that cost the same as street taxis, plus premium tiers. Uber operates with licensed cars at a 20–30% premium over Careem economy — worth it at surge-free late nights, rarely otherwise.
The pink-roof ladies taxi (driven by women, prioritising female passengers) is a genuinely useful option for solo women at night, bookable through the same channels. For groups of five or more, van taxis and Careem Max seat six — one van beats two sedans on price and coordination every time.
What rides actually cost
Airport to Marina or JBR runs roughly AED 85–110; airport to Downtown AED 60–80; Marina to Downtown AED 45–60; Deira to Downtown AED 30–40. Sharjah crossings add time more than money off-peak, but rush-hour jams can double both — the metro beats every car between 7–9am and 5–8pm on Sheikh Zayed Road. Inter-emirate trips (Dubai–Abu Dhabi around AED 250–300) are fixed-route territory where pre-booked transfers compete well with meters.
Tipping is not metered but customary: round up small fares, add AED 5–10 on longer runs, more for luggage help or exceptional service. Card payment works in nearly all RTA taxis; app rides bill to your card automatically.
Taxi smarts
- Photograph the taxi number (on the dashboard and doors) if you leave anything behind — recovery is efficient with it.
- Use Hala via Careem for meter-priced pickups without street-hailing in quiet areas.
- Avoid unmarked cars offering rides at airports and malls — licensed taxis queue visibly.
- Friday brunch hours and NYE see the worst availability; pre-book or metro those days.
- Child seats are not standard — request them explicitly when booking transfers with kids.
❓ Common questions
Uber or Careem?
Careem for price and local coverage (Hala = taxi rates); Uber for premium cars and familiar UX. Most residents keep both.
Are taxis safe at night?
Yes — regulated, GPS-tracked, with driver IDs displayed. Solo women also have the pink-roof option.
Do taxis take cards?
RTA taxis nearly all accept cards; app rides are cashless by default. Keep small cash as backup.
How do I complain or recover lost items?
Call RTA on 8009090 with the taxi number and time — the lost-property return rate is famously high.
Are larger vehicles available?
Yes — van taxis and Careem Max seat six with luggage. One van beats two sedans for groups on both price and coordination, especially airport runs.
How do tolls work in taxis?
Salik gates add AED 4 per pass to the meter automatically — normal on Sheikh Zayed Road routes. Dispute only duplicate or phantom charges via RTA with the printed receipt kept until card settlement.
