Cards & Cash

Cards accepted almost everywhere; Apple Pay and Samsung Pay work. Small shops may be cash only. ATM locations and fees.

A nearly cashless country

The UAE runs one of the most card-friendly economies on earth: malls, restaurants, taxis, metros, buses, government counters and even most souk stalls take Visa, Mastercard and contactless wallets including Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay. Street parking, Salik tolls and delivery apps all bill digitally too. For most itineraries, a single no-foreign-fee card plus a phone wallet covers 95% of spending without ever touching an ATM.

The 5% that stays cash-shaped matters disproportionately: the AED 1 abra ferry, karak tea stalls, tipping, mosque donation boxes, parking meters in older districts, and haggling leverage in souks. None of these accept cards, and all of them feature in a good week. The practical setup is therefore digital-first with a AED 200–300 cash reserve in small notes, refreshed once mid-trip from any bank ATM.

Cards, fees and ATM strategy

Use a card with zero foreign-transaction fees as the daily driver — the standard 2–3% bank markup is an invisible daily tax otherwise. When terminals or ATMs offer conversion to your home currency, always decline and choose dirhams; the offered rate hides a 3–7% spread over interbank. For cash, favour bank ATMs (Emirates NBD, FAB, Mashreq) inside malls and metro stations over standalone white-label machines with higher withdrawal fees, and withdraw larger sums less often to dilute flat per-withdrawal charges.

Notify your bank of travel dates before departure — a first transaction in Dubai is a classic fraud-trigger that freezes cards at the worst moment. Carry a backup card from a different network (one Visa, one Mastercard) stored separately from your wallet, so one loss or block never strands you.

When cards fail: the backup plan

Even perfect setups glitch: a swallowed ATM card, a fraud block that needs a callback, a lost wallet on a dhow. The recovery kit is threefold — the backup card in the hotel safe, emergency cash in two separate places (wallet plus luggage), and the bank apps installed with biometric login so replacement cards and limit changes happen from the hotel WiFi. Photograph both sides of every card into a secure note before departure; the numbers on the back are what phone agents ask for.

Western Union and exchange-house transfers bridge true emergencies, with funds available in minutes from home. And in the worst case — no cards, no cash — the embassy can arrange emergency loans for repatriation, while hotels routinely extend checkout credit to stranded guests with ID. Stranded-with-nothing is vanishingly rare for travellers who split their resources.

Payments checklist

  • Daily driver: a zero-foreign-fee card plus a phone wallet as backup.
  • Always pay in AED; decline terminal conversion to home currency.
  • Keep AED 200–300 cash in small notes plus coins for abras and tips.
  • Withdraw from bank ATMs in larger, less frequent amounts.
  • Second card on a different network, stored apart from the wallet.

❓ Common questions

Do I need cash at all?

Yes, a little — abras, karak stalls, tips and souk haggling stay cash-only. AED 200–300 covers days.

Is Apple Pay accepted?

Widely — terminals across malls, taxis and metros accept it. Keep the physical card for the occasional older machine.

Are ATMs safe to use?

Bank ATMs in malls, stations and hotel lobbies are safe and monitored. Shield the keypad and avoid isolated machines late at night anywhere in the world.

What if my card is blocked?

Call the number on the card back immediately (save it in your phone before flying) and switch to the backup card. Most blocks clear within minutes of verification.

Can I get cash back at supermarkets?

Sometimes at large Carrefour and Lulu counters with a purchase — handy when no ATM is near, though limits are small.
