Transit Visa

48-hour and 96-hour options, whether you can leave the airport, and the free Emirates Dubai Stopover program.

Can you leave the airport?

Yes — and on a long layover you absolutely should. Passengers transiting through Dubai or Abu Dhabi can enter the city on a 48-hour transit visa (around AED 50) or a 96-hour transit visa (around AED 100), both arranged in advance through your airline. The 96-hour option comfortably covers a two-night stopover: enough for the Burj Khalifa, the Marina, a desert safari evening and a proper night of sleep in a real bed.

The visas must be applied for before you fly — they cannot be issued at the immigration counter on arrival. Processing typically takes 3–5 working days through Emirates, Flydubai, Etihad or a travel agency, so build stopover planning into your booking flow rather than deciding at the gate.

Airline stopover programmes

Both flag carriers sweeten the deal beyond the visa itself. Emirates offers the Dubai Stopover programme with discounted hotel rates for transit passengers, and Etihad runs a similar Abu Dhabi Stopover with hotel deals plus selected free attraction access on longer layovers. These stack with the transit visa rather than replacing it — you still need the entry permission, the programme just makes the stay cheaper.

If your layover is under about five hours, stay airside: immigration, the metro ride and security on return consume the whole window. Eight hours or more is the practical threshold for seeing the city, and an overnight layover is better still.

Making a layover work

  • Leave luggage in the airport left-luggage facility or at your stopover hotel — do not drag cases through the metro.
  • The Dubai Metro runs directly from Terminals 1 and 3 to the Marina, Downtown and Deira in 25–45 minutes.
  • Keep boarding passes and the onward ticket accessible; transit re-entry goes through standard security.
  • Summer midday layovers (June–September) should be indoor-only: malls, the aquarium, the museum quarter.
  • A 6–8 hour evening window fits dinner at a Marina restaurant plus the Fountain show comfortably.

What to do with your hours

Twelve hours between flights fits the essentials: clear immigration (30–60 minutes at peak), ride the metro to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, watch the Fountain show, eat one proper meal, and ride back with a two-hour buffer before boarding. It is rushed but entirely doable, and thousands of passengers do exactly this every week.

Twenty-four hours unlocks the relaxed version: an evening arrival, dinner at the Marina, a full sleep, then a morning at JBR beach or the old souks before an afternoon flight. With 48 hours on the transit visa, add a full day — the morning in Old Dubai (Creek abra, Gold and Spice Souks, Al Fahidi), the afternoon at the Mall and the aquarium, and the evening on a desert safari or a dhow cruise. That 48-hour shape is the best value-per-hour itinerary in the entire country.

❓ Common questions

Do I need a transit visa for a 3-hour connection?

No, provided you stay airside and your bags are checked through. You only need entry permission if you pass through immigration.

Which nationalities need a transit visa?

Anyone who would need a visa for a normal visit needs one for a stopover too. Visa-on-arrival nationalities simply enter on that permission instead — no transit visa required.

Can I get the transit visa on arrival?

No. Arrange it through your airline before departure. Counter issuance does not exist.

Is Abu Dhabi or Dubai better for a stopover?

Dubai for icons and nightlife density; Abu Dhabi for the Grand Mosque and calmer pacing. Both airports connect to their cities by metro or taxi in under 45 minutes.

Visa rules change often and depend on nationality. Always confirm entry requirements with UAE authorities or your airline before booking.
