Visa on Arrival Countries

90+ nationalities get free visa on arrival for 30 or 90 days depending on passport. GCC nationals enter freely.

How visa on arrival works

For most Western visitors, entering the UAE involves no paperwork at all. You land, walk to immigration, get your passport stamped, and walk out — the whole process usually takes 20 to 40 minutes at Dubai International, longer only at peak holiday arrivals. There is no fee, no form to fill in advance, and no approval to wait for. The entry permission is issued on the spot as a visit visa, and it is free.

The key condition is your passport. It must be an ordinary (non-emergency) passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, and airlines will deny boarding if it is not — this rule is enforced at check-in, not at the UAE border, so check expiry before you book anything. You may also be asked to show an onward or return ticket, though in practice this is rarely checked for visa-on-arrival nationalities.

Who qualifies

Roughly ninety nationalities qualify, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, all EU Schengen states, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and many others. Depending on your exact passport you receive either a 30-day or a 90-day entry permission — most Europeans, Americans and Australians fall in the longer category, while several Asian and Latin American passports get 30 days. The list is reviewed and expanded every few years, so confirm your nationality on the official ICP or GDRFA websites within a month of travel rather than relying on old blog posts.

GCC nationals (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar) enter with just a national ID card and face no visa process at all. GCC residents holding professional job titles can usually get a 30-day e-visa on arrival, but this depends on the residency profession listed in the passport and is worth confirming with your airline in advance.

At the airport: step by step

  • Follow the Arrivals and Passport Control signs — at DXB Terminal 3 the walk from the gate can be 10 minutes on its own.
  • Join the Visitors lane (not GCC Nationals). Have your passport open at the photo page.
  • The officer scans your passport, takes a quick eye scan, and stamps you in. No questions in the vast majority of cases.
  • Collect bags, clear customs (usually a straight walk-through), and you are landside — metro, taxis and hotel shuttles are signposted from here.
  • First-timers can use the smart gates on later trips once registered, which cuts immigration to under a minute.

Extending and overstaying

A visa-on-arrival entry can be extended from inside the country without doing a border run — see our Visa Extension guide for the current process and costs. What you must not do is drift past expiry: overstaying triggers fines of AED 100 per day after a 10-day grace period, and unpaid fines block you at departure immigration until settled. If your plans are uncertain, apply for the longer 60 or 90-day tourist visa before you fly instead of gambling on an extension later.

❓ Common questions

Do I need to apply for anything before flying?

No. If your nationality qualifies, just arrive with a valid passport. Do not pay any website that offers to sell you a visa on arrival — it is free at the border and no pre-registration exists.

Is there really no fee?

Correct. Visa on arrival is free. Anyone asking for payment for the entry permission itself is running a scam.

Can I work remotely on a visa on arrival?

A short remote-work stint for a foreign employer is tolerated in practice, but you may not take local employment. For stays built around remote work, look at the one-year virtual working programme instead.

What if my passport expires in five months?

Renew before travelling. Airlines routinely refuse boarding under the six-month rule, and travel insurance will not cover the resulting losses.

Visa rules change often and depend on nationality. Always confirm entry requirements with UAE authorities or your airline before booking.
