Hudayriyat Island Beach
The capital's new playground — free beaches, world-class cycle tracks, skyline views
The locals' sunset beach — calm water facing west, minutes from downtown
While tourists queue for Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi residents drift to Al Bateen: a sheltered, mangrove-flanked beach on the island's western shore whose water sits lake-calm and — crucially — whose horizon faces due west. This is the capital's sunset beach.
It's modest and lovely: soft sand, swim platforms floating offshore, paddleboard rentals, a boardwalk threading the mangrove edge, and cafés keeping it comfortable without theming it to death. Weekday evenings it's a neighbourhood; weekends a gentle gathering.
For families the calm shallows beat every open-Gulf beach in town, and for photographers the sun dropping over the water — rare on this coastline — is the daily show.
