Al Wathba Fossil Dunes

Four thousand flamingos in a desert wetland — the capital's pink spectacle
Al Wathba Wetland is a conservation success story: a salt-lake system that began as treated-water outflow and became the first protected area in the UAE — now wintering up to 4,000 greater flamingos, which famously breed here, along with 250+ other bird species.
Two walking trails (1.5 km and 3 km) loop the lakes past hides and viewing platforms where the pink armadas feed, squabble and take off in loud panicked elegance. Rangers keep it orderly; the whole reserve runs quiet, free and delightfully un-commercialised.
It opens only through the cooler months and on set days, so check before driving — then stack it with the fossil dunes and salt lake ten minutes away for the complete Al Wathba nature circuit.
