Al Wathba Long Salt Lake

Wind-carved stone waves in a protected desert park — surreal and free
The Fossil Dunes are ancient dunes turned to stone: tens of thousands of years ago, calcium-rich sands cemented and the wind then carved them into frozen waves, fins and cresting shapes — a sculpture park made by weather, scattered across a protected stretch of Al Wathba desert.
Abu Dhabi's environment agency formalised the site with a paved approach, walkways, night lighting and information points — so unlike most desert oddities, an ordinary car and sensible shoes get you there. Nearly 1,700 formations dot the reserve; the headline cluster stands minutes from the car park.
At sunset the stone glows amber and the shapes throw theatrical shadows; after dark, subtle lighting keeps the sci-fi mood going. Pair it with the flamingo wetland and salt lake nearby for the full Al Wathba circuit.
