📖 About

Twenty minutes past the safari crowds, the Al Faya stretch opens into what most people imagine when they say "desert": long red dune fields rolling toward the Fossil Rock massif with almost nobody in them. It's the local secret for wild camping, dune picnics and photography without another vehicle in frame.

The area borders Sharjah's Mleiha desert, which means two bonuses: some of the darkest accessible night skies near the cities (the Mleiha stargazing experiences run nearby), and a landscape studded with genuine archaeology — this corridor has been inhabited since the Stone Age.

There's no infrastructure, which is the entire appeal. Sunset tea on a dune crest here, with the sand turning blood-orange and the first stars arriving, costs nothing and outclasses most paid experiences in the emirate.

⭐ Highlights

  • Vast red dunes with a fraction of Lahbab's traffic
  • Among the darkest star skies within an hour of Dubai
  • Classic wild-camping and dune-picnic territory
  • Fossil Rock and the Mleiha archaeology corridor next door
  • Free and unfenced

💡 Insider Tips

  • Camp on firm sand near (not under) dune faces, and take every trace home.
  • For stars, check the moon phase — a full moon erases the Milky Way but lights the dunes beautifully.
  • Fuel up in the city; stations thin out along the E88.
  • Standard desert rules: 4x4, deflated tyres, a buddy car for deep sand, and double the water you think.
