Al Faya Desert
Vast, empty red sands on the Sharjah border — the crowd-free alternative
The famous rust-red dunes — dune-bashing and buggy country
The iron-oxide sands of Lahbab — nicknamed Big Red after its 100-metre signature dune — are the deepest-coloured dunes within reach of the city, and the beating heart of Dubai's desert-adventure industry. This is where the evening safaris bash, the quad bikes swarm and the buggy convoys fly.
Weekends bring a genuine local spectacle: modified Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrols attacking Big Red's face while families picnic at the base. Join in with a rented quad or buggy from the operators lining the road, or book the full safari package with camp, BBQ and shows.
For photographers, skip the machines and walk twenty minutes into the sand — the rust-red ridgelines at golden hour, cut with fresh tracks, are the desert image everyone comes home with.
