The locals-only strand by the old ghost town — sunset with history attached
The Gulf's last pearling ghost town — abandoned whole, eerily intact
When oil work drew its families to Abu Dhabi in the late 1960s, the pearling town of Al Jazirah Al Hamra was simply left — and half a century later its coral-stone houses, mosques, souk lanes and wind towers still stand in salt-crusted silence: the last intact traditional coastal town in the Gulf.
Wandering it is time travel with sand drifting through doorways — plus the obligatory jinn folklore that makes it the Emirates' favourite "haunted" destination. Restoration is stabilising sections and hosting arts events, but the raw abandoned atmosphere endures. Go at golden hour; take only photographs and the shivers.
