Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve
The UAE's largest unfenced nature reserve — free desert, full of wildlife
Racing camels training at dawn — the most Emirati sight in Dubai, and it's free
Every winter morning, strings of racing camels file across the Al Marmoom desert to train on the racing track — jockeyed by small robot riders, shadowed by trainers in 4x4s shouting instructions through walkie-talkies. It is gloriously surreal, deeply traditional, and completely free to watch.
Camel racing is the UAE's heritage sport, and Al Marmoom is one of its temples. On official race days (season runs through the cooler months, with major festivals around March) the grandstands open to everyone: no tickets, no fees, just bring curiosity and watch owners' SUVs race down the inside rail alongside their camels.
Around the track, the open desert is dotted with camel farms, wandering herds and oryx from the neighbouring reserve — sunrise here delivers more authentic UAE per minute than any paid excursion.
