Fossil Rock & Jebel Buhais
The mountain full of sea shells — the UAE's most famous off-road landmark
Space-pod architecture on a 93-million-year-old seabed ridge
Five interlinked pods — like a research station landed on Mars — perch on the flank of Jebel Buhais, interpreting a landscape that was ocean floor 93 million years ago: the surrounding rocks are ophiolite, deep-sea crust shoved onto land, studded with marine fossils.
Inside, immersive galleries walk you from plate tectonics to the fossils at your feet; outside, a skywalk viewing deck hangs over the ridge with panoramas across the fossil fields to the dunes.
It's the region's most architecturally striking small museum and nearly always empty — the definition of a hidden gem, ten minutes from the Mleiha circuit it completes.
