📖 About

Fossil Rock does exactly what it promises: the marine fossils of a 70-million-year-old seabed stud its slopes — shells and sea creatures embedded in rock now floating above a sea of red dunes. It's the most recognisable silhouette in the UAE desert and the traditional graduation test of every off-road driver.

Neighbouring Jebel Buhais adds the human layer: its slopes hold necropolises spanning 5,000+ years, interpreted by the striking pod-architecture of Buhais Geology Park on the ridge.

Summit scramblers get a 360° panorama over the dune fields; everyone else gets the classic shot of the rock glowing rust-gold at sunset with buggy trails threading the sands below.

⭐ Highlights

  • Marine fossils visible in the rock faces
  • The UAE's iconic off-road silhouette
  • Summit scramble with 360° dune panoramas
  • Jebel Buhais' ancient necropolises nearby
  • Free, and magnificent at golden hour

💡 Insider Tips

  • No 4x4? Book the Mleiha centre's drives — sedans die in these sands.
  • Look, photograph, leave: fossil-chipping is both vandalism and illegal.
  • The summit route takes the gentler south ridge; wear grippy shoes.
  • Sunset from the dune line west of the rock is the postcard.
