Spice Souk
Sacks of saffron, frankincense and dried limes — old Arabia by the nose
The City of Gold's beating heart — 300+ shops and tonnes of gold on open display
Dubai is called the City of Gold, and this covered arcade in Deira is why. More than 300 jewellers line the wooden-latticed walkways, their windows stacked with bangles, bridal sets, and showpieces — including some of the world's largest gold rings. At any moment, several tonnes of gold sit on display around you.
Two things make buying here special: gold is sold by weight at the live international rate (displayed on boards throughout the souk), and it's tax-free. You negotiate only the "making charge" — the craftsmanship fee on top of the metal price. Purity is strictly regulated by Dubai's government, so 22k marked is 22k real, even in the smallest shop.
Even if you buy nothing, come for the theatre of it: the glittering windows, the mix of serious buyers and wide-eyed tourists, and the streets around it flowing straight into the Spice and Perfume Souks — old Dubai's golden triangle.
