Gold Souk
The City of Gold's beating heart — 300+ shops and tonnes of gold on open display
Sacks of saffron, frankincense and dried limes — old Arabia by the nose
The Spice Souk is the smell of old Dubai: narrow covered lanes where open sacks of cinnamon bark, dried roses, frankincense, sumac and chillies spill onto the walkways, and shopkeepers wave you over for a pinch of saffron in your palm. This is the creek-side trade that built the city, still running in its original lanes.
The stars to buy: Iranian saffron (real threads run roughly AED 40–80 per gram — much cheaper is suspect), frankincense from Oman with charcoal burners to match, za'atar and sumac blends, dried limes (loomi), vanilla pods and date-filled boxes for gifts.
It's compact — a handful of lanes — so treat it as a sensory stop on an old-Dubai loop: Gold Souk, spice lanes, then the one-dirham abra across the creek to the Textile Souk. Together they're the best hour in heritage Dubai.
