The Mountain of Women — fossils at 2,000 metres and rock art on the way
Musandam's highest mountain (~2,000 m) — named "Mountain of Women" for the villages where wives waited out fishing seasons — is climbed by a spectacular graded road through terraced hamlets to a plateau where marine fossils pattern the summit rocks: the seabed of Tethys, lifted two kilometres into the sky.
En route: the Bedouin plateau of Sayh (improbable green fields at altitude), prehistoric rock-art carvings pecked into boulders near the passes, and viewpoints down canyons that out-drama anything on the peninsula. The military crest is off-limits; the fossils and views aren't.
