Wind towers, coral-stone lanes and courtyard cafés — the Dubai that came first
"Open doors, open minds" — Emirati meals and honest answers in a heritage house
The SMCCU exists to answer the questions visitors are too polite to ask. In a beautiful wind-tower house in Al Fahidi, Emirati hosts serve traditional meals — chebab pancakes, balaleet, machboos, gahwa and dates — and then open the floor: religion, dress, marriage, money, anything. The motto is literal.
Founded in 1998 under Sheikh Mohammed's "Open Doors, Open Minds" vision, the centre also runs the guided visits at Jumeirah Mosque, heritage walking tours of the old quarter, and Ramadan iftar experiences that let non-Muslims join the breaking of the fast.
Travellers consistently rank this among the most meaningful things they do in Dubai — an hour of real conversation that reframes the whole glittering city around it.
