The 1768 fort that guarded the peninsula — now the emirate's memory box
A time-capsule peninsula — coral houses, dhow harbour and streets from another UAE
Old Umm Al Quwain is what the Gulf coast looked like before the boom: low coral-stone houses (some crumbling, some lived-in), watchtowers, a working dhow harbour and streets where goats have right of way. No emirate preserves the pre-oil atmosphere so unselfconsciously.
The walk writes itself — fort to harbour to the old souk corner to the sea wall — with fishermen mending nets and the smell of the morning catch for authenticity no heritage village can stage. Photographers and slow travellers rate it among the UAE's most rewarding wanders.
