The Gulf's grand old art museum — Orientalist masters to Arab modernism, free
One of the largest art museums in the Gulf and among its oldest, the Sharjah Art Museum holds the emirate's serious collections: 19th-century Orientalist painting (the ruler's own collection of European artists' Arabian visions), landmark Arab modernists, and rotating contemporary exhibitions across three floors.
It anchors the Arts Area — a district of restored houses hosting the Sharjah Art Foundation's contemporary spaces — and every other spring becomes a hub of the Sharjah Biennial, the region's most important contemporary art event.
Entry is free, crowds are thin, and the Arab-modernism galleries fill a gap no Dubai institution covers. Art-minded visitors should treat Sharjah's quarter as the region's honest art capital.
