Al Fahidi Historical District
Wind towers, coral-stone lanes and courtyard cafés — the Dubai that came first
Street art and pop-up studios in the heritage lanes — old Dubai's creative corner
Sikka — from the Arabic for the narrow alleys of the old quarter — is where Dubai's emerging artists take over heritage architecture. Murals, installations and pop-up studios colonise the lanes and courtyards, layering contemporary UAE creativity onto 19th-century walls.
Its beating heart is the annual Sikka Art & Design Festival, when dozens of commissioned works, live performances, film screenings and food concepts fill the district for two weeks — the best time by far to visit. Outside festival season, murals and rotating installations keep the lanes worth a slow wander.
Because it overlaps the Al Fahidi quarter, you can fold it into a heritage afternoon: museums and wind towers first, then hunt the art in the backstreets — the emerging-artist counterpoint to Alserkal's established galleries.
